Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

The Geeky bit 🤓

A man in a black tuxedo with a bow tie and glasses, standing in front of a science research poster about clinical trials for a drug. The poster includes charts, graphs, and chemical diagrams.

Medicines like Tirzepatide target two hormones (GIP and GLP-1), which can lead to even greater weight loss in the right patients.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults with overweight or obesity (without diabetes) taking tirzepatide once weekly, alongside lifestyle advice, lost roughly 16–22% of their starting weight over 72 weeks, compared with about 3% on placebo.

Follow-on studies suggest that staying on treatment helps maintain that weight loss, while stopping completely can lead to partial weight regain – which is why I’m very open with patients about the need for long-term planning, not “quick bursts” of treatment.

I consider dual-agonist treatment when:

  • Your cardiometabolic risk is high (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, prediabetes/diabetes)

  • You meet regulatory criteria and there are no red flags in your history or bloods

  • We’ve discussed realistic expectations, ongoing monitoring and what happens after the weight comes off

Are you eligible for Mounjaro?

If you are eligible…

As a clinical pharmacist with a specialist interest in weight management, my focus is safe, sustainable results — not quick fixes.

If you are eligible, your plan may include prescription weight-loss medication (such as Mounjaro) alongside personalised nutrition, activity guidance, and behaviour-change support. But the medication is only one tool.

This is not “just selling the pen”

You are enrolling in a clinically supervised service + a pen designed to keep you safe and help you succeed. That means:

  • a proper eligibility assessment and medical review

  • clear expectations and goal-setting

  • structured follow-up to track progress, side effects, and adherence

  • medication optimisation (including interactions, suitability, and ongoing safety)

  • adjustment of your plan as your weight and health markers change

Why clinical follow-up matters

Prescription weight-loss treatments can be highly effective, but they require the right patient selection, education, monitoring, and review. Regular follow-up helps ensure you are getting benefit, managing side effects, and staying on track — and it allows us to stop or change course if it’s not right for you.
